1. Mulranny Park Hotel – Mulranny
Historic Charm and Stunning Views
Mulranny Park Hotel, situated in the beautiful village of Mulranny, offers breathtaking views of Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick.
This historic hotel features an excellent 20 indoor swimming pool which for anyone with kids is an absolute godsend! As beautiful as Mulranny is, the village is a good distance from any town so during bad weather a facility like this is so very welcoming.
Oh and don’t forget to avail of the seaweed baths and onsite gym. After all your pampering, I recommend enjoying a pint of Guinness at the bar. As hotels go, I reckon Mulranny Park pours one of the best pints of the black stuff you’ll have the pleasure of enjoying.
During good weather, the area is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts, with easy access to the Great Western Greenway and bike rental in the village. Achill Island is nearby too, as well as Westport only half and hour away.
Why We Like It:
- Scenic location: Stunning views and access to the Great Western Greenway.
- Historic charm: Beautifully preserved architecture and interiors.
- Outdoor activities: Cycling, walking, and exploring the Wild Atlantic Way.
2. The Plaza – Westport
Family-Friendly Comfort and Convenience
The Plaza Hotel, located in Westport town centre is a modern, comfortable hotel. Sharing its leisure centre with the Castlecourt Hotel next door, the C Club offers guests an indoor swimming pool, sauna, and steam room and many other spa treatments.
One option we highly recommend is the sea weed bath, something that will leave you incredibly relaxed and ideal after a day hiking the nearby Croagh Patrick.
The hotel’s family-friendly services and convenient location make it a great choice for both relaxation and exploring the town of Westport by foot.
Why We Like It:
- Comprehensive facilities: Shared access to a well-equipped leisure centre.
- Family-focused: Family rooms and kid-friendly amenities.
- Central Westport: Easy access to local attractions and nightlife.
3. Castlecourt Hotel – Westport
Family-Friendly Comfort and Convenience
The Castlecourt Hotel, located next to the Plaza is known for its welcoming atmosphere and extensive facilities. This hotel has been the ‘go-to’ for many locals for years and holds a stellar reputation for comfort, as well as having a lively pub, Petie Joe’s. Any time I have been there, there has been live music and great craic.
If choosing to stay here, you may avail of the facilities in the Plaza next door. If unsure of which one to stay in, in my view, the Castlecourt offers more of a classic style comfort and the Plaza is more contemporary. The Plaza tends to book out quicker, so the Castlecourt is an excellent alternative.
Why We Like It:
- Comprehensive facilities: Shared access to a well-equipped leisure centre.
- Family-focused: Family rooms and kid-friendly amenities.
- Central Westport: Easy access to local attractions, pubs and restaurants.
4. Atlantic Coast Hotel – Westport

The Atlantic Coast Hotel, located slightly outside the town on Westport Quay, offers stunning views of Clew Bay and is within a 10-15 minute drive of Croagh Patrick. This hotel is ideal for those who wish to stay a little outside of the busy town of Westport.
The hotel is also within walking distance to the grounds of Westport House, which has recently opened a fantastic adventure park, guaranteed to be a hit for the kids. A few hours of adventure followed by a splash in the pool is a great way to keep the whole family happy!
The hotel has an 18 metre indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and kids’ pool. The pool and wellness area has a very modern feel to it as this whole hotel recently renovated.
Why We Like It:
- Beautiful setting: Overlooking Clew Bay and close to Westport Quay and Westport House.

Family-Friendly Fun and Relaxation
Breaffy House Resort, located just outside Castlebar, is an ideal choice for families and couples alike.
The resort features an excellent leisure centre with a large 20 metre indoor swimming pool, kids’ pool, sauna, and Jacuzzi. Set within 90 acres of sprawling grounds, the resort provides ample space for outdoor activities and there are some lovely walks on site.
The hotel also offers a substantial gym which provides a wealth of fitness classes. The use of all these wonderful facilities are complimentary to all guests of the hotel.

Comfort and Convenience with a Touch of Luxury
The McWilliam Park Hotel, located in Claremorris, offers a welcoming atmosphere combined with excellent facilities. The hotel’s leisure centre includes an 18 metre indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room, kids’ pool and Jacuzzi.
While Claremorris may not be a classic tourist location, the hotel is located conveniently along the N17 road and is a solid option if thinking of staying in the local area. You will get a better deal here than in the more popular town of Westport.
Why We Like It:
- Modern amenities: Spacious and comfortable rooms.
- Leisure facilities: Extensive pool and wellness area.
- Great location: Ideal for exploring Claremorris or if on the way to Galway.
7. Knockranny House Hotel & Spa – Westport
Panoramic Views and Modern Comforts
Perched on a hill overlooking Ireland’s most beautiful bay, Clew Bay and stunning Croagh Patrick, Knockranny House Hotel & Spa offers breathtaking views as well as easy access to Westport town.
The hotel’s Salveo spa features an indoor pool that’s perfect for a refreshing swim after a day on the Greenway or Croagh Patrick. The pool area is well-maintained, providing a tranquil Mediterranean style atmosphere to unwind in.
The spa offers a fine selection of treatments and it’s safe to say that one could easily pass a few days here without ever setting a foot outside the door!
One of the other main reasons I highly recommend Knockranny is because of the magnificent La Fougere restaurant. Expect fine dining (but not pretentious) with a view that’s hard to beat in the west of Ireland.
Why We Like It:
- Scenic location: Spectacular views and close to Westport’s attractions.
- Award-winning spa: Extensive range of treatments and therapies.
- Gourmet dining: La Fougère Restaurant offers exquisite cuisine.
8. Mount Falcon Estate – Ballina
A Tranquil Retreat in Beautiful Surroundings
Mount Falcon Estate, located near Ballina, is a Victorian Gothic manor house set on a 100-acre estate. The hotel’s 17 metre indoor swimming pool is part of its award-winning spa, which also features a sauna, steam room and hydrotherapy lounges.
The estate offers a great range of outdoor activities, including falconry, fishing and clay pigeon shooting. I paid a visit not so long ago and enjoyed a lovely outdoor dining experience under the ‘bamboo tents’.
I also enjoyed the best crab claws I have had for a long time. The vast grounds gave the kids plenty of space to run around so a win-win for all involved!
Why We Like It:
- Beautiful setting: Woodland and lakeside walks.
- Comprehensive wellness: Spa treatments and fitness facilities.
- Outdoor activities: Fishing, clay pigeon shooting, and archery.
9. Ashford Castle – Cong
Luxurious Elegance in a Historic Setting
Ashford Castle, situated in the picturesque village of Cong, is not only one of the finest hotels in County Mayo but also one of the most luxurious in the world.
This 800-year-old castle, which once belonged to the Guinness family, is surrounded by 350 acres of manicured gardens, offers an indoor heated pool with stunning views of Lough Corrib and the dense woodlands. The pool area is beautiful with its classical design, complete with mosaic tiles and a relaxation area.
A visit to Ashford is reserved for that extra special occasion and once that will live long in your memory. The nearby village of Cong, which is within walking distance is in my view, one of Ireland’s prettiest villages and well worth a day trip.
Why We Like It:
- Historic charm: Staying in a castle dating back to 1228.
- Luxurious amenities: Spa, fine dining, and a cinema.
- Activities: Falconry, golf, and beautiful walks.
